SUMMARY:The Manchester International Crime and Justice Film Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:8 Fabulous Films : Thursday 7th   May – Friday 19th June 2026 \n\n\n\n\nDownload: Crime and Justice Film Festival Calendar – May – June 2026\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWelcome to the 2026 festival sponsored by the School of Sociology & Criminology at Manchester Metropolitan University and curated by the university’s Policy Evaluation and Research Unit. \n\n\n\nSince 2019 we’ve had a consistent mission – screening great films which provoke debate and provide an alternative take on crime\, justice and punishment in the 21st century. \n\n\n\nThis year’s programme brings you an eclectic mix of international crime classics and lesser-known gems from a century of cinema\, with settings ranging from the Scottish islands to the south of Chile. Our experts will be on hand to introduce the movies and to answer your questions at Q+A sessions after each screening. Selected screenings will also feature short films documenting creative projects delivered in prisons\, in partnership between artist Faye Claridge\, learners from each establishment and our partner Novus. \n\n\n\nScreenings will take place at Grosvenor East Building\, the university’s Arts and Creative Hub. Grosvenor East is on the corner of Oxford Road and Cavendish Street\, five minutes walk from Oxford Rd train station. We also have a joint screening with our partners at Instituto Cervantes Manchester.     \n\n\n\nWe look forward to welcoming old friends and new audiences alike\, from the UK and internationally. \n\n\n\nSee you at the movies! \n\n\n\nYour festival team: \n\n\n\nKevin Wong\, Gavin Bailey\, Anton Roberts\, Katie Hunter\, Phil Edwards and Benedicte Brahic \n\n\n\nFilm notes by Phil Edwards

SUMMARY:Social Justice Lecture Series : Ecological Harm Reduction: Reimagining Drug Policy with Clemmie James
DESCRIPTION:What if drug policy wasn’t just a health or legal issue\, but a climate issue too? \n\n\n\nIn this powerful and eye-opening talk\, Clemmie reveals how drug prohibition is not only failing to reduce harm\, but is also quietly driving deforestation\, environmental destruction\, and social injustice across some of the most fragile ecosystems on the planet. \n\n\n\nFocusing on the global coca and cocaine economy\, this talk uncovers how prohibition has created a vast\, unregulated market that fuels illegal mining\, land grabbing\, and violence\, particularly in regions like the Amazon. The communities most affected are often Indigenous peoples and smallholder farmers\, who are criminalised for their traditional practices while being pushed off lands that are critical to protecting biodiversity and tackling climate change. \n\n\n\nBut this isn’t just a story of harm\, it’s also about possibility. \n\n\n\nClemmie introduces the concept of “teacher plants” such as coca\, cannabis\, and poppy\, plants that have been used for generations in Indigenous cultures for healing\, spirituality\, and sustaining relationships with the natural world. Rather than recognising their value\, modern drug policies have reduced them to illicit commodities\, breaking vital cultural and ecological connections. \n\n\n\nThe talk also explores an innovative new approach: Ecological Harm Reduction\, developed by the International Coalition for Drug Policy Reform and Environmental Justice. This fresh framework challenges us to rethink drug policy as part of a wider system of environmental and social justice\, one that protects ecosystems\, respects Indigenous knowledge\, and supports sustainable\, community-led economies. \n\n\n\nAt a time of escalating climate crisis\, Clemmie makes a compelling case: without rethinking prohibition\, efforts to protect the planet may continue to fall short. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a thought-provoking discussion that connects drug policy\, climate justice\, and Indigenous rights and invites us to imagine a future rooted in care\, balance\, and sustainability.

SUMMARY:Roots of Resistance
DESCRIPTION:This event explores the intersection of feminism\, public green spaces\, and the role of plants in shaping memory and identity. It centres on the legacy of Rosa Grindon—a suffragist\, botanist\, and Shakespearean lecturer—and uses her story as a lens to reflect on women’s lives are remembered . \n\n\n\nRosa Grindon\, initiated the first version of the Shakespeare Garden\, which was established in Whitworth Park in 1916 engaged in radical social and cultural work\, which included campaigning for women’s suffrage; active involvement in various learned societies and clubs; helping working-class people to establish small gardens to improve their lives; drawing attention to the issues such as clean air and fair treatment of domestic servants; as well as popularising grassroots involvement with Shakespeare. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe event combines a guided historical walk with a hands-on creative workshop \n\n\n\nThe walk will take place in the Shakespearean Garden at Platt Fields Park\, created by Rosa Grindon. There\, the participants will learn about Rosa’s life through a talk by Dr Monika Smialkowska (Northumbria University\, Newcastle) and enjoy a tour of the garden led by Kattie Kincaid\, the garden’s lead volunteer. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will be held indoors at a nearby community centre (Birch Community Centre). Using a mixed-media approach that includes sensory mapping and creative writing\, artist Chiara Dellerba will guide participants through a meaningful encounter with plants that have shaped our identities\, sensory memories\, and daily habits. Participants will also collaboratively create a fire cider vinegar. \n\n\n\nEvent Timings: \n\n\n\n10:00am: Arrival & Check in \n\n\n\n10:30am: Walking tour & Talk with Dr Monika Smialkowska \n\n\n\n12: 00pm : Creative Workshop – Lunch Provided \n\n\n\n2:00pm : Event Ends \n\n\n\nThe walk is step free – please let the organisers know when booking if you need access support eg. sound amplification \n\n\n\nOrganisers: \n\n\n\nThe Sylvia Pankhurst Gender and Identity Knowledge Network\, an interdisciplinary centre for critically engaged feminist research.
