SUMMARY:Future-Proofing Equality in Children's Publishing Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Centre For Fiction\, Manchester Metropolitan University \n\n\n\n📅 Friday 14th November 2025 – 9.00am – 6.00pm \n\n\n\n📍 Grosvenor East Theatre\, Manchester Metropolitan University \n\n\n\nIn both historical and contemporary contexts\, from the UK’s Section 28 to Russia’s ‘Law for the Purpose of Protecting Children from Information Advocating a Denial of Traditional Family Values’ and Florida’s HB 1467 and HB 1069 laws\, the censorship and banning of children’s literature is traditionally the frontline of wider attempts to censor literature. \n\n\n\nThis Centre For Fiction one-day symposium explores the impact of an accelerating global political resistance to equality\, diversity and inclusion (or\, ‘woke’) in children’s publishing\, and provides an opportunity to listen and learn from the experiences of authors\, publishers and booksellers in the US\, where the full force of executive\, judicial and litigious power is having a chilling effect on minority representation in children’s books. \n\n\n\nBringing together children’s publishers\, writers\, illustrators\, specialists\, academics and students\, this symposium will facilitate urgent conversations and bold ideas around equity in children’s storytelling – by acknowledging the present\, listening to voices from the frontline\, examining how the industry can resist regression\, and considering meaningful action to create an inclusive future for children’s literature. \n\n\n\nFor Full Agenda and information about the research click here

SUMMARY:Information Lives in DIY Culture
DESCRIPTION:Join us at SODA (School of Digital Arts) for Information Lives in DIY Culture. \n\n\n\nThis is a day-long event convened by Dr Kirsty Fife\, explores the relationship between DIY cultures (grassroots and political cultures and practices) and information\, archives\, libraries and heritage. \n\n\n\nExamples of this include (by aren’t limited to!) setting up physical and/or digital grassroots libraries and archives (e.g.\, Salford Zine Library\, Manchester Digital Music Archive)\, collaborations between institutions and DIY cultural organisers (e.g.\, People’s History Museum and Over Here Zine Fest)\, archives of grassroots culture and social movements)\, and people with a background in DIY culture working in information organisations and the information sector. \n\n\n\nThe event will be informal and different to more traditional academic conferences. Anyone is welcome to attend\, including people involved in DIY cultures (for instance musicians\, zine makers\, organisers)\, people who work or volunteer in information organisations (libraries\, archives\, museums and more!) and people doing research (in universities or any other spaces!). This event aims to bring together people in each of these spaces so that we can learn from each other\, share skills and knowledge\, and make connections that help sustain our endeavours in the future. \n\n\n\n\nClick here to view the full programme
