SUMMARY:Bunker Talk #153: Zodwa Nyoni
DESCRIPTION:Zodwa Nyoni \n\n\n\nZodwa Nyoni is a Zimbabwean-born playwright\, librettist\, screenwriter and director. Her debut play\, BOI BOI IS DEAD won the Channel 4 Playwrights’ Scheme in 2014. It was also a finalist for the international Susan Smith Blackburn Prize 2014/15. Since\, her plays have been produced in the UK\, France\, Germany\, USA\, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Her most recent work\, THE DARKEST PART OF THE NIGHT (Kiln Theatre) was shortlisted for the Alfred Fagon Award and George Devine Award 2021. It was ranked as one of the best plays of 2022 by The Independent (UK). \n\n\n\nZodwa’s plays are published by Bloomsbury. She has lectured in poetry and theatre since 2018. She is currently a Lecturer in Scriptwriting at Manchester Metropolitan University and an associate dramaturg for Tiata Fahodzi and Fifth Word Theatre. She has written two radio plays\, LOVE AGAIN (BBC Radio 3) and A KHOISAN WOMAN (Drama on 3); and three short films: MAHOGANY (National Trust and 24 Design Ltd) and NOTES ON BEING A LADY (New Creatives / BBC Arts) and the award winning\, THE ANCESTORS (BBC Films and BFI Network). \n\n\n\nZodwa was an international fellow on Oxbelly’s inaugural Episodic Program in Greece. She is a BAFTA Connect member and was on the BIFA mentoring programme. She is currently working on Netflix’s spin-off series\, CASTLEVANIA: NOCTURNE; under commission at Manchester Royal Exchange\, Bristol Old Vic and Kiln Theatre; and writing an opera for Buxton International Festival. \n\n\n\nLIBERATION\n\n\n\nHow does a revolution begin and who keeps it going? \n\n\n\nCommissioned by the Royal Exchange Theatre \n\n\n\nProduced by the Royal Exchange Theatre and Factory International\, Manchester \n\n\n\nInspired by true events in Black British history\, LIBERATION is a powerful new play from writer Ntombizodwa Nyoni and director Monique Touko tracing the private lives of activists who fought to liberate Africa. \n\n\n\nIt’s 15 October 1945\, Manchester. Africa’s freedom and future is in the hands of her descendants at the Fifth Pan-African Congress at Chorlton-on-Medlock Town Hall. \n\n\n\nWith decades of championing change under their belts\, emerging African & Caribbean activists and scholars offer new radical ideas of liberation. However\, the organiser\, Trinidadian activist George Padmore is unsure who to pass the baton to. Kwame Nkrumah is fuelled by an idealistic desire to become the first Black president of the Gold Coast. Young\, resourceful Jamaican social worker Alma La Badie is grappling with the truth behind who must be sacrificed for the cause. And what of the revered Amy Ashwood-Garvey how does she ensure the voices of Black women are heard? \n\n\n\nA story of hope\, friendship and the consequences of a long-denied awakening unravels in the conference halls and bars of Chorlton\, but at what cost? \n\n\n\nThis groundbreaking new play developed 80 years after the Congress introduces the people behind the movement. LIBERATION gets to the heart of how our future is built\, how our leaders are made\, and how dreams are realised. With generational shifts and gender politics added to a swirling mix of power dynamics\, LIBERATION asks timeless questions about revolution\, freedom\, and what it means to be an activist. \n\n\n\nReceiving its World Premiere as part of Manchester International Festival 2025\, LIBERATION includes composition by Ife Ogunjobi from the Brit Award-winning Ezra Collective and was commissioned by the Royal Exchange Theatre. Find out more here: https://www.royalexchange.co.uk/event/liberation/ \n\n\n\n\nResources around the 5th Pan-African Congress\, held 15-21 October\, 1945 in Manchester\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBunker Talks\n\n\n\nThis event is part of Bunker Talks. Bunker Talks invite artists and researchers to talk about who they are and what they do. Curated by the Performance Research Group at Manchester School of Art\, Bunker Talks explore geopolitical\, ecological or economic concerns. The talks create space for critical encounters\, presentations\, provocation and dialogue. \n\n\n\nOriginally conceived in the pandemic to explore how artists\, writers\, curators and researchers continued to make and share their work\, live Bunker Talks now take place at The Salutation every month. Since 2020\, over 150 talks have been hosted by Art & Performance Researchers and colleagues from across the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. All talks are recorded\, edited\, captioned and then archived to create an online catalogue\, capturing how artists\, makers and curators think about the world today. SUMMARY:Ancestral Avant-Gardes
DESCRIPTION:organised by Claire Bishop\n\n\n\n\n\nImage: Grace Ndiritu\, Healing the Museum\, 2023 \n\n\n\nThis one-day event\, organised by art historian and critic Claire Bishop\, will offer a range of artistic approaches to ancestrality in contemporary art and performance. \n\n\n\nSpeakers and participants include: Yinka Esi Graves\, Grace Ndiritu\, Claire Tancons\, and Lucy Wright. \n\n\n\nThe conference addresses the resurgence of interest in ‘ancestralism’ among performance and visual artists\, who hark back to traditional\, pre-modern or indigenous forms of collective knowledge\, often in the form of ceremonies\, rituals\, and invocations. The reasons for an artistic interest of healing and ritual are important\, and perhaps all too obvious: the global climate crisis\, white supremacy’s systematic oppression of Black and indigenous life\, and the failures of Western rationalism. These issues need to be articulated and reiterated. At the same time\, difficult questions arise: whose ancestors are being invoked\, and to what ends? SUMMARY:Karen Barbour\, ‘Where the Fruits of the Trees Are Jewels’
DESCRIPTION:curated by Simon Grant and Andrew Hunt \n\n\n\n\n\nMoon Grove Gallery Manchester \n\n\n\nExhibition : 18 October to 20 December 2024 \n\n\n\nOpen Thursdays and Fridays 12pm to 6pm during exhibitions \n\n\n\nAfter two solo exhibitions in New York at White Columns in 2022 and Jack Hanley Gallery in 2023\, Moon Grove presents Karen Barbour’s first solo show in the UK. Comprising twenty-nine paintings on paper that include a new body of work as well as paintings and collages that have been re-visited over the years\, it dwells on the California-based artist’s intense concern for the spiritual in painting and how it might serve to alter psychological perspectives on landscape\, cityscape or our internal relationship with our environment in general. \n\n\n\nEssentially\, Barbour’s work can be described as ‘visionary’\, in one respect because her work is imaginative\, direct and raw\, and in another because she is inspired by her infrequent experience of temporal lobe seizures\, a situation she describes as becoming ‘stricken with powerfully intense barrages of very accurate memories from my life’. On a wider cultural level her work is deeply connected and informed by US West Coast grass roots creative moments: the tradition of psychedelic illustration and pattern\, self-taught artistic communities\, and the Bay Area’s pioneering history of supported studios for artists with disabilities. \n\n\n\nLinks between these subjects and those in northern England reside in shared interests in music\, local museum collections\, approaches to painting and equally in artists making work in supported studios. With this connection in mind\, Barbour has drawn reference to her fascination with artworks held in the seminal Musgrave Kinley Outsider Art Collection at Manchester’s Whitworth Art Gallery\, along with the many relationships that these works share with her own. Motifs and approaches include the depiction of strangely built structures\, included in Dusan Kusmic’s towers\, which communicate directly with Barbour’s own visionary buildings\, Drago Jurak’s paintings of inventive monuments and a picture of a striped house by Frederic Vaudour. Irregular figures are also a concern for Barbour: Shafique Uddin pointillist portraits; Guillaume Pujolle’s dancing people; Aloise Corbaz’s colourful likenesses; as well as others works by Anna Zemankova\, Michel Nedjar\, Madge Gill and Valerie Potter. \n\n\n\nA publication that documents this exhibition\, spread over Moon Grove’s intimate\, domestic gallery spaces\, will follow in 2025. This will contain wider contextual information and biographical images\, alongside an interview between Barbour and the curator and writer Simon Grant. \n\n\n\nKaren Barbour (b. 1956)\, lives and works in Inverness\, CA. She received a BA at UC Davis and an MFA in Film from San Francisco’s Art Institute. Barbour has worked as an author and an illustrator\, and over the past twenty years her work has been included in exhibitions in San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, and New York\, among other places. \n\n\n\n\nI collect my ideas and try to put them into the paintings. Most of them evolve slowly over a long period of time. I work spontaneously and the pictures are constantly changing. \nKaren Barbour interviewed by Simon Grant This conversation took place during June and July 2024 ahead of Karen Barbour’s exhibition at Moon Grove\, Manchester.\n\n\n\n\nClick to read full Interview with Karen Barbour\n\n\n\n\nMoon Grove would like to acknowledge that ‘Where the Fruits of the Trees Are Jewels’ has been made possible with generous funding from Manchester Metropolitan University’s AHEAD fund. \n\n\n\nMoon Grove\, 7 Moon Grove\, Manchester M14 5HE \n\n\n\nmail@moongrove.org

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Design for Dementia\, Mental Health and Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Our online book launch will bring together the editors and contributors of this exciting volume. We will explore key issues of co-design\, design interventions and design policy for enhancing mental health and wellbeing\, including advancements\, benefits and gaps for discussion by our speakers and panel. \n\n\n\nIntroduction by the editors: The editors\, Professor Kristina Niedderer\, UK\, Professor Geke Ludden\, Netherlands\, Professor Tom Dening\, UK\, and Professor Vjera Holthoff\, Germany\, will provide an overview of the focus\, aims and context of the book. \n\n\n\nAuthor contributions: A number of our international contributors will introduce their chapters and how they co-design interventions with people to improve various aspects of mental health and wellbeing. Contributors include: Rosa Almeida and Raquel Losada\, Spain; Leigh-Anne Hepburn\, Australia\, Elena Bellini\, Italy\, and others. \n\n\n\nPanel discussion\, including Q&A: Chaired by Dr Anna Bergqvist\, editors and contributors will explore some of the critical points around the role and recognition of design as well as design policy (and the lack thereof) in the health and care context to elicit current issues and future opportunities. \n\n\n\nThe book: \n\n\n\nThis edited volume offers the first overview of how design can contribute to people’s wellbeing and mental health in the context of dementia\, mental illness and neurodiversity. The book explores and promotes holistic\, wellbeing-focused and preventive strategies that recognise and respond to people’s needs\, wants\, wishes and rights to further health\, wellbeing and equality. Being experienced designers and clinicians\, the contributors to the book emphasise how design can be a collaborative\, creative process as well as an outcome of this process. Through its three parts\, the book explores themes of ethics\, citizenship and power relationships in co-design; of the culturally and value sensitive adaptation of design interventions and their applications; and of policy and related standards in and for design and mental health. In this way\, the book demonstrates how design can help to support people\, their care partners and care professionals in promoting mental health and wellbeing. It offers a rich overview and resource on how to create a sustainable future for care in this domain for designers\, researchers\, students\, policy providers and health and care professionals to help support the development and adoption of person-centred design processes and interventions. \n\n\n\nFind out more about our book: 10.4324/9781003318262 \n\n\n\nEditors: \n\n\n\n\nKristina Niedderer is Professor of Design at Manchester Metropolitan University\, UK.\n\n\n\nGeke Ludden is Professor of Interaction Design at the University of Twente\, the Netherlands.\n\n\n\nTom Dening is Professor of Dementia Research in the School of Medicine\, University of Nottingham\, UK.\n\n\n\nVjera Holthoff-Detto is Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine Carl Gustav Carus\, Technische Universität Dresden\, Germany.

SUMMARY:40 Years of the Future
DESCRIPTION:40 Years of the Future\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a two-part series of conversations that bring together three historic Manchester-based institutions in their anniversary years to discuss the histories and future of the arts in Manchester and surrounding regions. \n\n\n\n______ \n\n\n\nThe second event in the series will take the form of a chaired conversation between artists\, curators and researchers with connections to organisers within Manchester and neighbouring cities. The histories of marginalised artists in the first event will serve as a prompt for discussing the emergence of current and future initiatives in the city region and regions that aim to amplify less visible or peripheral voices in the art world today\, including artist-led groups and organisations. \n\n\n\nThe event will invite us to consider the continued need for these kinds of groups and spaces in our contemporary social\, economic and political context. We ask: What has changed since the founding of Manchester Art Gallery and Castlefield Gallery\, respectively? How have artists looking for spaces that fulfil their needs shaped the city? What role do art institutions play within Manchester’s art ecology today? And what the future for artists in our city and surrounding regions could or should look like? \n\n\n\nSpeakers:– Thomas Griffiths: Artist and co-director and curator of GLOAM\, Sheffield.– Jo McGonigal: Artist and Fine Art lecturer in the School of Fine Art\, History of Art & Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds. Jo McGonigal will be exhibiting at Castlefield Gallery with Frank Bowling later this year as part of the gallery’s 40th anniversary programme. \n\n\n\n– Rachel Goodyear: Artist and co-director of Islington Mill\, Salford.– Yuen Fong Ling: Artist and curator based at Bloc Studios Sheffield\, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art and Post Graduate Research Tutor at Sheffield Hallam University. Former director of exhibitions at Castlefield Gallery (1999-2005).– Kay Shah: Artist and member of DMZ studios. He was recently awarded the Castlefield Gallery Artist Professional Development Award at HOME as part of the Manchester Open 2023. \n\n\n\nLearn more and book tickets for the first part here \n\n\n\n______ \n\n\n\nThese events are supported by AHEAD (Arts and Humanities Engagement And Dialogue)\, the public engagement programme of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Manchester Metropolitan University. \n\n\n\nLOCATION\n\n\n\nCastlefield Gallery\, M15 4GB

SUMMARY:200 Years of Manchester Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:200 Years of Manchester Art Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a FREE two-part series of conversations that bring together three historic Manchester-based institutions in their anniversary years to discuss the histories and future of the arts in Manchester and surrounding regions. \n\n\n\n______ \n\n\n\nThis first event takes the origins of Manchester Art Gallery as its starting point\, looking at its multiple histories and putting them in conversation with the present. To initiate a conversation about the roles played by this civic art institution and how it relates to similar organisations in the North of England\, we will ask questions about who founded the gallery\, and how that impacted its development. We will also consider the gallery as a site of education (for example\, hosting life drawing classes)\, provoking wider questions about who had access to these events and how the gallery continues to be an educational institution today. Through asking these questions\, we hope to uncover some of the lesser-known voices and hidden histories that have been involved in the story of Manchester’s historic gallery\, drawing parallels with institutions in Manchester such as Castlefield Gallery and Manchester School of Art and further afield in particular Leeds Art Gallery. \n\n\n\nThe event will be chaired by Danielle Child (Manchester School of Art) and will take the form of three talks from Rebecca Wade (Special Collections and Galleries\, University of Leeds)\, Hannah Williamson (Fine Art Curator\, Manchester Art Gallery)\, and Thomas Dukes (Curator and Researcher) followed by Q&A. Peter Davis\, the archivist for Manchester Academy of Fine Arts (MAFA) established in 1858 will also be at the event offering attendees a chance to look through some of MAFA ‘s scrapbooks. \n\n\n\nLearn more and book tickets for the second part here \n\n\n\n______ \n\n\n\nThese events are supported by AHEAD (Arts and Humanities Engagement And Dialogue)\, the public engagement programme of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Manchester Metropolitan University. \n\n\n\nhttps://ahead.mmu.ac.uk
