SUMMARY:40 Years of the Future
DESCRIPTION:40 Years of the Future\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a two-part series of conversations that bring together three historic Manchester-based institutions in their anniversary years to discuss the histories and future of the arts in Manchester and surrounding regions. \n\n\n\n______ \n\n\n\nThe second event in the series will take the form of a chaired conversation between artists\, curators and researchers with connections to organisers within Manchester and neighbouring cities. The histories of marginalised artists in the first event will serve as a prompt for discussing the emergence of current and future initiatives in the city region and regions that aim to amplify less visible or peripheral voices in the art world today\, including artist-led groups and organisations. \n\n\n\nThe event will invite us to consider the continued need for these kinds of groups and spaces in our contemporary social\, economic and political context. We ask: What has changed since the founding of Manchester Art Gallery and Castlefield Gallery\, respectively? How have artists looking for spaces that fulfil their needs shaped the city? What role do art institutions play within Manchester’s art ecology today? And what the future for artists in our city and surrounding regions could or should look like? \n\n\n\nSpeakers:– Thomas Griffiths: Artist and co-director and curator of GLOAM\, Sheffield.– Jo McGonigal: Artist and Fine Art lecturer in the School of Fine Art\, History of Art & Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds. Jo McGonigal will be exhibiting at Castlefield Gallery with Frank Bowling later this year as part of the gallery’s 40th anniversary programme. \n\n\n\n– Rachel Goodyear: Artist and co-director of Islington Mill\, Salford.– Yuen Fong Ling: Artist and curator based at Bloc Studios Sheffield\, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art and Post Graduate Research Tutor at Sheffield Hallam University. Former director of exhibitions at Castlefield Gallery (1999-2005).– Kay Shah: Artist and member of DMZ studios. He was recently awarded the Castlefield Gallery Artist Professional Development Award at HOME as part of the Manchester Open 2023. \n\n\n\nLearn more and book tickets for the first part here \n\n\n\n______ \n\n\n\nThese events are supported by AHEAD (Arts and Humanities Engagement And Dialogue)\, the public engagement programme of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Manchester Metropolitan University. \n\n\n\nLOCATION\n\n\n\nCastlefield Gallery\, M15 4GB

Between the 1970s and 80s hundreds of interviews with working class people were undertaken\, many of them born in the late nineteenth century\, detailing their lives and their experiences working in Manchester’s now lost industries. This remarkable piece of research would develop into what is now known as the Manchester Studies Oral History Collection. This panel brings together those who worked on the creation of the archive\, have used it\, and who now care for it\, in order to stimulate new conversations and research directions around this remarkable resource. We will also be providing a workshop by current oral history practitioners on best practice in oral history research. \n\n\n\n2.00pm – 3.00pm – Session Three: Paranormal Manchester : \n\n\n\nPresented by DⱯRK Research Group \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n• Ian Waring (Flecky Bennett ghost tour guide) \n\n\n\n•Mark P Henderson (Professional storyteller and folklore expert) \n\n\n\n• Dr. Morag Rose (Psychogeographer and expert on strange Manchester) \n\n\n\n• Emily Oldfield (Poet and writer) \n\n\n\n•Hannah Singleton (Lecturer in the Department of Art and Performance) \n\n\n\nGhosts\, earth mysteries\, UFOs\, cryptids\, occult energies\, and their kin are\, by definition\, intangible – absent presences that cannot always be fully known\, touched\, and rationally explained. Evidence\, where it exists\, is often elusive and indefinable\, and always contested.  Manchester’s strange heritage encompasses many strands of the paranormal from hauntings to occult practitioners\, hairy cryptids to canal monsters. This session seeks to explore these phenomena and allow members of the public to experience this hidden and strange side to Manchester. \n\n\n\n3.45pm – 5.15pm – Session Four: Intangible Heritage in Place \n\n\n\nPresented by the Dr Johnathan Djabarouti of the Heritage Impact Network (HIN) \n\n\n\n\nBernadette Bone\, Conservation Architect and Tutor at the Manchester School of Architecture\, Owner BB Heritage Studio\n\n\n\nJenna Johnston\, Senior Heritage Consultant\, Buttress\n\n\n\nKatie Wray\, Director\, Deloitte\n\n\n\n\nThe Manchester School of Architecture’s Dr Johnathan Djabarouti will host a ‘Long Table’ panel of invited industry guests and members of the newly created Heritage Impact Network (HIN)\, with encouragement for public participation from the audience. \n\n\n\nThe newly formed ‘Heritage Impact Network’ at Manchester Met brings together contemporary heritage researchers who have a specific interest in understanding ephemeral\, intangible\, social\, and non-physical manifestations of heritage and culture. At this Long Table event the network’s interests will respond to the UK’s recent ratification of the UNESCO (2003) Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage\, by shifting their attention to historic places. How do immaterial manifestations of culture – such as cultural practices\, storytelling\, memories\, rituals\, and events – relate to physical heritage buildings\, sites\, and places? Experienced industry heritage practitioners from various disciplinary perspectives and heritage remits will join network members\, along with empty chairs at the table for audience participation in the conversation. \n\n\n\n7.00pm – 10.30 pm Evening Event DⱯRK MASS – \n\n\n\nAt HOME\, Events Space\, 2 Tony Wilson Pl\, Manchester M15 4FN – Separate Booking page \n\n\n\nFollowing the day sessions at MMU\, please join us in the events space at HOME for an evening of performance linked to our themes. \n\n\n\nPresented by the DⱯRK Research Group and the Music and Sonic Studies Research group (MASS) at Manchester Metropolitan University \n\n\n\nThis evening performance will showcase the soundscapes and research-influenced music being created by PhD students and staff. \n\n\n\nFeaturing: \n\n\n\nKatie Chatburn: ‘The Shape of Sounds’. Using data from her research around how people draw and perceive sound bringing graphic scores to life through a semi-improvised piece with synths and amplified strings. \n\n\n\nMarkus Hetheier: In his soundscape performance\, Markus Hetheier will investigate queer sonic geographies of Manchester. \n\n\n\nChris Gladwin: ‘Runic Acid (V.2)’ A conjunction of the city’s musical past and Pennines occult heritage from witchcraft to chaos magic. \n\n\n\nSusan O’Shea & Julian Holloway  ‘Monstrous Women: Sounding Space at Boggart Hole Clough’.

SUMMARY:200 Years of Manchester Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:200 Years of Manchester Art Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a FREE two-part series of conversations that bring together three historic Manchester-based institutions in their anniversary years to discuss the histories and future of the arts in Manchester and surrounding regions. \n\n\n\n______ \n\n\n\nThis first event takes the origins of Manchester Art Gallery as its starting point\, looking at its multiple histories and putting them in conversation with the present. To initiate a conversation about the roles played by this civic art institution and how it relates to similar organisations in the North of England\, we will ask questions about who founded the gallery\, and how that impacted its development. We will also consider the gallery as a site of education (for example\, hosting life drawing classes)\, provoking wider questions about who had access to these events and how the gallery continues to be an educational institution today. Through asking these questions\, we hope to uncover some of the lesser-known voices and hidden histories that have been involved in the story of Manchester’s historic gallery\, drawing parallels with institutions in Manchester such as Castlefield Gallery and Manchester School of Art and further afield in particular Leeds Art Gallery. \n\n\n\nThe event will be chaired by Danielle Child (Manchester School of Art) and will take the form of three talks from Rebecca Wade (Special Collections and Galleries\, University of Leeds)\, Hannah Williamson (Fine Art Curator\, Manchester Art Gallery)\, and Thomas Dukes (Curator and Researcher) followed by Q&A. Peter Davis\, the archivist for Manchester Academy of Fine Arts (MAFA) established in 1858 will also be at the event offering attendees a chance to look through some of MAFA ‘s scrapbooks. \n\n\n\nLearn more and book tickets for the second part here \n\n\n\n______ \n\n\n\nThese events are supported by AHEAD (Arts and Humanities Engagement And Dialogue)\, the public engagement programme of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Manchester Metropolitan University. \n\n\n\nhttps://ahead.mmu.ac.uk
