A strong interest in Russian Christianity led to research at Oxford in the religious thinkers of the Russian emigration – and later to a book on Dostoevsky. From 2002 until 2012\, he was Archbishop of Canterbury\, continuing to write on theology\, philosophy\, and contemporary issues\, and retired in 2012 to move back to the university as Master of Magdalene College\, Cambridge. \n\n\n\nOver the years\, he has written a number of books\, academic and popular\, on Christian faith\, as well as publishing several collections of poetry and a number of essays on literary themes\, including some studies of Shakespeare and a book on tragedy. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature as well as of the British Academy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanel & Book Launch: Dramatizing Distanz: Radio and Modern German Philosophy \n\n\n\nThursday 3rd September 9:30-1:00pm \n\n\n\nThis panel uses the occasion of a shared book launch to explore the theme of radio and modern German philosophy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDas Kapital: The Audio Drama \n\n\n\nThursday 3rd September 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM. \n\n\n\nSarah Woods’s dramatization of Marx’s Das Kapital. Originally broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2018\, the play is an occasion for us to consider themes of audio dramatization and technology from the book launch. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeynote: Professor Judith Butler – University of California\, Berkeley \n\n\n\nThursday 3rd September 4:30-6.00pm \n\n\n\nProfessor Butler is one of the world’s leading scholars and philosophers on issues of gender\, sexuality\, and the cultural phenomena that surround them. They are the author of the landmark 1990 book Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity\, and more recently the 2024 follow-up work Who’s Afraid of Gender? \n\n\n\nJudith has received numerous awards\, including the Adorno Prize from the City of Frankfurt in honour of their contributions to feminist and moral philosophy and the diploma of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Cultural Ministry. Judith is active in several human rights organizations\, having served on the board of the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York and the advisory board of Jewish Voice for Peace.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Josh Platzky Miller and Dr Lea CantorFriday 4th September 2:15 – 3:45pm \n\n\n\nDr Lea Cantor is the University of Cambridge Blacker Loewe Research Fellow in Philosophy\, and was awarded the 2022 British Journal for the History of Philosophy Beaney Prize for the best contribution to widening the philosophical canon. Lea is also an Associate Editor of the British Journal for the History of Philosophy and founded Philiminality\, a student-run platform for cross-cultural and interdisciplinary philosophy. \n\n\n\nDr Josh Platzky Miller is a Lecturer in Sociology. Josh’s primary research interests are social movements\, African and Latin American politics and political thought\, social epistemology and the imagination\, and the global history and historiography of philosophy. Main research project: The Myth of ‘Western Philosophy’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganisers\n\n\n\nThe The Transdisciplinary Philosophy Research Group (TPRG) brings together researchers in philosophy with those from other disciplinary backgrounds and areas with philosophical interests. The group recognises the interdisciplinary nature of much Modern European (or ‘Continental’) Philosophy. \n\n\n\nIt also recognises the productive ways in which researchers in other areas have appropriated and transformed this philosophical history. Our members undertake research in both traditional and non-traditional philosophical forms. \n\n\n\nSupported by AHEAD \n\n\n\nAHEAD is the public engagement programme of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Manchester Metropolitan University.

SUMMARY:Games Workshop Research and Play Convention 2026
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nThe Manchester Game Centre is hosting its third annual Games Workshop event on 19th September. Join for a day of talks and games. \n\n\n\nWe are pleased to announce that our third annual Games Workshop Research and Play Convention is taking place on Saturday 19th September\, 2026 at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation\, Manchester. \n\n\n\nGames Workshop has been at the forefront of tabletop gaming for over five decades\, producing some of the most culturally significant games\, miniatures\, and fictional worlds in the hobby’s history. GWRPC brings together researchers\, players\, and designers to explore Games Workshop’s games and their wider legacies\, welcoming contributions from all disciplinary backgrounds. For its third outing\, the event will run all day from 8:20am until 8:00pm.  \n\n\n\nThe morning will be dedicated to talks about Games Workshop’s games\, the afternoon will feature a keynote from the game designer Tuomas Pirinen followed by a social evening of gaming and music at ‘Grimdark after Dark’\, organised in collaboration with the Dark Arts Research Kollective. \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open for all members of the public\, staff and students to attend (under 18s must be accompanied by an adult). \n\n\n\nJoin us at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation in Manchester for a day of talks and gaming. \n\n\n\nImage Credit: Warhammer World Space Marine.
