Society and Change Saturday Club Collaborates with SuAndi and the Mixed Museum
Saturday school students from History, Politics and Philosophy’s Society and Change Saturday Club, run in collaboration with the National Saturday Club, has recently co-produced some amazing work with local poet, SuAndi and the Mixed Museum
The History, Politics and Philosophy Department at Manchester Metropolitan University runs an exciting Society and Change Saturday Club that enables Club members to explore a range of important issues that affect society and how we live, both in the past and in the present day.
The Mixed Museum is a digital museum and archive dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of racial mixing in Britain for future generations.

As part of a funded project ‘SussedBlackWoman’ is a partnership between The Mixed Museum and SuAndi – ‘one of Britain’s leading Black mixed race writers, poets and arts practitioners.’ This incredible project documents SuAndi’s life and creative work and connects to Manchester’s history of racial mixing.
Saturday club students were invited to attend workshops with SuAndi on campus where they co-produced poems on three linked themes: What is life?, Respect and Names. These beautiful poems were performed by club members and the recording can be accessed via the SussedBlackWoman Gen Z section of Mixed Museum website that launched on 5th June 2024 .
The film also features ‘Kaiser’, a poem SuAndi wrote in response to the workshops, which was then animated by MMU student Maria C. Moraru.

Dr Marie Molloy, Senior Lecturer in American History & Academic Lead for the Society and Change Club notes,
“The Society and Change Club is a fantastic example of how people can come together to produce impactful work that really matters. The workshops with SuAndi demonstrate how collaborations between the university, local schools, creative practitioners, museums, and the National Saturday Club can come together in a powerful way. There was a wonderful synergy between club members and SuAndi. By sharing her story and creative work, she inspired them to explore their ancestry and meanings behind their own names.”
Society and Change Saturday Club runs for 16-weeks each year from January-June. It is open to 13-16-year-olds in the Greater Manchester region to come and learn for free on a Saturday! It provides an intellectual and creative space on campus to learn about the big issues in society from race and racism, mental health, well-being through time, to human rights.
